I'm sitting somewhere between a social anthropologist and an optimistic opportunist in this space; swaying between making commentary through film and literature and real world intervention via the business world. For the last three years I've been working with the New Zealand Sustainable Business Network (www.sustainable.org.nz) which is a fantastic organisation of motivating, action-based people assisting business to think about its wider role in the world.
I've also been working on artistic projects concerning water, oil and our relationships with them (see most recently The Water Show at Christchurch's Physics Room) and I'm really keen to see more artists engage and contribute ideas to our way out of this conundrum.
I've just re-read John Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath. Written 70 years ago it still says heaps about the nature of social attitudes to wealth, power and corporate responsibility.
I believe that it is the values which ultimately lie beneath our actions that have got us into this strange cannibalistic time and place. It's also really easy to become busy, busy busy but I've found that quick 'solutions' are as distracting as they are attractive. Hence my favourite quote:
What is worth doing and what is worth having? It is worth doing nothing and having a rest. (Michael Leunig)
