Xero’s Software as a Service business model – where software is hosted on the internet – is an innovative means of supplying a solution to large fragmented markets such as small businesses. This helps businesses adopt more sustainable practices as there is no need for each organisation to have their own hosted server, or store financial data at a secure location offsite. This means not only is data more secure, but less power is used.
Because Xero is online it removes a number of environmentally detrimental aspects associated with traditional software like the shipping of disks, uploading/couriering disks and data from small businesses to their accountants, travel time, vehicle emissions, the use of paper and ink as well as the general costs associated with these activities.
