Teams from China, Japan, Canada and Australia have registered to be part
of the inaugural Tour of New Zealand cycle race. These teams will ride
alongside of a solid contingent of New Zealand teams to collectively ride
from end-to-end of the country. Each team will have their own support crew
and many small communities will benefit from the influx in visitors that
the tour will bring.
The Tour of New Zealand is a unique concept where competitors can either
ride from Cape Reinga to Wellington (770km) or from Bluff to Wellington
(720km) over seven (7) days; before culminating with a criterium on the
final day around the grounds of the Beehive (NZ Parliament).
This is an exceptional opportunity for international cycle groups to ride
in a controlled community environment through some of the most stunning
countryside in New Zealand. While this is an event for amateur /
recreational cyclist the tour is structured with competitive elements for
those that wish to embrace the challenge. It will be exciting too to find
the first Tour of New Zealand mens and womans Champion...an honour every
competitive cyclist will dream to achieve.
“It is envisaged that some teams will be serious about chasing daily line
honours, while others will participate at a more leisurely pace for the
achievement of being part of the first even Tour of New Zealand” Race
Director Peter Yarrell said. “Either way it will be a fantastic journey and
a wonderful way to celebrate cycling, see our beautiful country and enjoy a
sense of community”.
