These days, corporate social responsibility, or CSR, is becoming an increasingly critical component of successful business. Making money is no longer the bottom line, with shareholders increasingly demanded all-round responsible practices—from the way staff are treated to responsible environmental stewardship, to positive contribution to the local community. And shortly, Celsias will be featuring a new CSR section, dedicated exclusively to businesses doing good, or not so good as the case may be.

HOW TO WIN

In the meantime, we want you to tell us what you think CSR means or what you think it should encompass. Share your thoughts with us and you could win some delicious lightly sparkling sauvignon blanc from the sustainable folks at Villa Maria.

Corporate Social Responsibility is enlightened business brand-protection or brand building. For example, the companies in Christchurch that get behind a new 'greening the rubble' project to use vacant quake-damaged sites for community benefit will be better regarded, have more fulfilled staff and get some publicity. Call Rhys on 021 462 260 if this appeals to your sense of CSR?

By becoming carbon zero certified.

Where to start? Monitoring carbon emissions, recycling and reusing at every opportunity, adhering to OSH practices, providing locally grown food for staff, turning everything off at the wall when you leave the building, composting, using bicycles/skateboards/feet as transport...could go on and on...

Comments so far are all about 'soft' sustainability - too much emphasis on eco efficiency and not enough of eco effectiveness. CSR needs to be fully strategic with 2/5/10 yr plans and a goal to be true/hard sustainable by the end of it. Get that piece of work right and projects get generated pretty quickly. Given that, I believe a true CSR focus would be on working with and within communities that VM sell to and buy from (what value does VM give to these communities outside financial?). What makes these communities sustainable by definition makes VM sustainable.
