102 community groups have received a share of nearly $570,000 distributed by the SkyCity Hamilton Community Trust to support all sorts of enterprise and community work.

From organisations upskilling people to those celebrating the region’s arts and culture, supporting sports, health care and community, the Hamilton Community Trust has provided funding that will reach almost every corner of its region and touch almost every citizen.

Thousands of dollars were distributed to social enterprise organisations that work to help young people with life skills and employment opportunities.

The Kaiwhenua Organics Charitable Trust ($15,000), Te Whangai ($10,000) and Miomo Charitable Trust ($7,000) each work with at-risk youth imparting lifeskills that improve employment prospects and personal wellbeing.

Kaiwhenua received $15,000 towards construction of a barn at its gardens in Raglan that will be used for education purposes. Te Whangai works within the nurturing environment of a native plant nursery and received $10,000 to contribute towards the cost of trainers to provide lifeskills programmes. Miomo works to equip 17-24 year olds with the skills to lead responsible and independent lives. Funding has been approved to provide scholarships for at risk and financially disadvantaged families to put their young adults through the Making It On My Own (MIOMO) course.

Grants of $15,000 or more apiece were issued to The Order of St John Central Region Trust Board, Hamilton Gardens Summer Festival Foundation, The FUEL Festival Trust, WEL Networks Healthier Homes programme, Hamilton Rowing Club and Balloons over Waikato Trust for projects ranging from buying a new vehicle for the St John Health Shuttle Service to providing funds to insulate homes of low income families, and celebrate local arts and culture in a ‘Coming Home’ themed festival.

The Society of St Vincent de Paul – Hamilton, St John Te Kauwhata, Stage Challenge Foundation, Star Youth Trust, FYD Waikato, Kidscan Charitable Trust, Philips Search & Rescue Trust, McKenzie Centre, Creative Hamilton, Habitat for Humanity CNI were among those that received $10,000 each for a wide variety of projects and community support.

Trust chair Margaret Evans steps down this month after nine years service. She says she has been consistently delighted with the diversity of organisations working for the good of the local communities.

“Over the years we have allocated more than $4,325,500 to 974 community groups and it is constantly humbling to see the work that this money has supported in our region.”
