From a long distance away here in New Zealand we got caught up in the joy and excitement of Barack Obama's bid for the Presidency. We honestly thought such a man could change the nature of America's politics. We thought it fantastic to wave goodbye to George W. Bush and like the rest of the world we celebrated.
We were wrong...
Even such a man as Obama has not been able to change American politics and for the last while he has been hobbled by Congress. But he can do nothing it seems to take serious action on climate change.
So we watch ( from afar ) this election with real trepidation ....and every time we think they're joking it turns out to be a real bid for the Republican nomination. Michelle Bachmann, we thought they just had to be having us on.
But no - it was real.
And now Rick Perry - a serious Republican Party presidential hopeful apparently.
We looked for his his views on climate change
On climate change :
"I do think global warming has been politicized,We are seeing almost weekly or even daily scientists are coming forward and questioning the original idea that man-made global warming is what is causing our climate to change.
"Yes, our climate has changed. It has been changing ever since the Earth was formed. But I do not buy into a group of scientists who have, in some cases, been found to be manipulating data.
"I don't think from my perspective that I want America to be engaged in spending that much money on still a scientific theory that has not been proven and from my perspective is more and more being put into question,"
And : Quite frankly, when science gets hijacked by the political Left, we should all be concerned.” "it's all one contrived phony mess that is falling apart under its own weight. Al Gore is a prophet all right, a false prophet of a secular carbon cult, and now even moderate Democrats aren’t buying it.”
“They have seen the headlines in the past year about doctored data related to global warming. They know that we have been experiencing a cooling trend, that the complexities of the global atmosphere have often eluded the most sophisticated scientists, and that draconian policies with dire economic effects based on so-called science may not stand the test of time"
And on evolution here's Rick Perry's view when he was Governor ... Apparently it's just a theory!
"Recognizing that evolution is a theory, and not claimed by anyone to be more than that, the governor believes it would be a disservice to our children to teach them only one theory on the origin of our existence without recognizing other scientific theories worth consideration. Intelligent design is a concept that is gaining greater traction because it points to a notion that most people believe to be true: that we were created by an intelligent being who designed the human race with great detail and complexity...."
So creationism and intelligent design are okay for students in Texas , and climate change is just an expensive theory .
And they've got to be pulling our leg on this one, right ?
