With 96% of precincts reporting at 11:40 p.m. Eastern, former senator Rick Santorum ( he who thinks "environmentalism is a religion being pushed on the American public" ) was in a virtual tie with former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, leading him by just 79 votes.
Both of them had a bit less than 25% of the total and Rep Ron Paul was close as well with 21%
Whoever turns out to be this year's winner will finish with the lowest percentage of any GOP winner in Iowa’s modern history. Bob Dole holds that record to date with just 26%
In fourth place is Newt Gingrich at 13.2% so far.
