There are few better ways to show that implementing environmental and carbon neutrality measures doesn’t have to impede on business growth, than by being named New Zealand’s fastest growing exporter at the 10th annual Deloitte Fast 50 index of New Zealand's high growth businesses. The accolade was awarded to online retailer Natureshop, who was also named second-fastest growing company overall.
Natureshop had 1106 percent growth, coming second to Telecom Rentals with 1897 percent growth. The Deloitte index ranks the top 50 businesses according to their revenue growth over the past three years and sets the standard for high growth businesses in New Zealand.
The online retailer sells brands including Icebreaker Clothing, Snugs sheepskin slippers and EMU Australia sheepskin boots to a database of more than 75,000 customers. Around 70 percent of its exports go to Europe, 15 percent to North America, while 10 percent go across the Tasman.
“We’re thrilled to be recognised in this way through the Deloitte index; the awards will help us bring the Natureshop line of quality clothing and footwear to even more customers around the world,” says Natureshop managing director Conrad Cranfield.
Natureshop has been certified carbon neutral by independent certification authority carboNZero CertTM. And with plans to open a second distribution centre in the UK—in order to better serve its key customers across Europe and in the United States—the retailer will soon apply for comparable UK certification.

Also making the top five list of fastest growing businesses is Energy Light. Taking out the third position with a 1081 percent growth, the Christchurch- based company is turning an increasing number of customers on to its energy-saving solutions.
Since 2004, the company has been researching high- performance, cost effective and environmentally friendly alternatives to metal halide for large-scale commercial and industrial applications. The R&D paid off when it came up with a light fixture that enables business owners to improve the working environment while saving thousands of dollars.
Company manager director Nelson Duder says the company has succeeded in changing a market “entrenched with old technology.” And its new technology promises to have a major impact on New Zealand energy consumption – producing power savings of more than 40 percent.
To make the 2010 Deloitte Fast 50, companies had to achieve growth of 161 percent, slightly up on last year's benchmark of 145 percent, while growth of at least 523 percent was required to make the top 10 on the index.
