Canterbury residents can see the exact areas that the two gas exploration permits cover. Permit 52605 covers mid and South Canterbury, whilst 52614 covers North Canterbury. Basically, it’s the whole of Canterbury.

Click here to see the permit areas overlaid on Google Maps. The map allows you to zoom in to see just how close it is.

So if you thought you were leaving the city to get away from earthquakes -be very careful .None other than the US Government has now linked fracking to earthquakes. And watch out for pollutants and toxins in your water and your ground. Or fight it !

So when we have gas fields all over the red and green areas in about 5 years time, how will that be helping us to reduce our emissions by 50% in 2050? Earth to Dr Smith? http://www.national.org.nz/Article.aspx?articleId=35726

You need to watch the DVD "GasLand" NZ should not be going down this path. Fracking kills landscapes dead and endangers residents. Say no to your local politition now!

Laconic, articulate Josh Fox's documentary (Gasland) is the F6 storm warning and the first/last word on the horror of hydrofracturing, you get to know and care about the people and animals affected and you will thank fate that it is not us - yet. Hydrodraulic fracturing (the US model) uses approx. 596 chemicals (all proprietary) together with 1-7 million gallons of water per bore. The process returns 'produced water' which is toxic. The natural water table is shattered...mixing gas, frac-fluid and drinking water. With respect, earthquakes are the least concern; Canterbury has one of the world's purest aquifers, if not unique, it is abhorrent that this will be destroyed and then all you can do is set fire to it or make plastic from it. We need to organise. Andrew Mackenna, ChCh, NZ. 13/2/12

people say thay have already began fracking in the canterbury plains as theres talk about how those chemicals getting into the already fradgile cracks are causing the land to slip in places creating small movements in the ground, which then lead to pressure on the big crack causing more large earthquakes.my god we live in an unstable city and theyr planning on taking away the one thing we would like to think is stable...our water supply.if i had it my way they can shove that tax up their asses because i do not believe anything they do is to benifit the people, more like benifiting their back pockets!

I just left the USA after living there for 21 years, the state of drilling over there is maniacal and of course fracking is a major focal point. Gasland of course is filmed in the USA and the environmental damage being done is diabolical and tragic. We should do all that we can to stop the spread of fracking here in New Zealand.

The oil companies still need to obtain resource consents to use water and to discharge waste from Fracking activities. Its the Cant Reg Council that is I think the last resort in halting this process here. I think it would be wise to let them know the feeling out there.
