Those sleek white behemoths that tie up dockside at Auckland may look squeaky clean, but a new report card from Friends of the Earth suggests all ocean liners are not created eco-equal.

The organisation has compared the environmental footprint of 11 major cruise lines and 113 cruise ships, so potential passengers can choose to cruise with a lower impact on the marine and terrestrial environment.

Indeed, they are not equal. Some companies have been very proactive in minimizing their impact, while others... Not so much. Ironic, given that the cruise lines have a vested interest in keeping ports clean and their vessels full. No one wants to holiday in a trash-infested hellhole. What my company faces in selling our emissions control equipment to the ship owners is that the solution must be economically feasible: It always will come down to dollars. Until the regulations continue to be added, or customers stop cruising with the worst violators, things are unlikely to change.
