An interesting concept ...a carbon lottery .
Based in Malta a lottery ticket costs £2 and is the equivalent of offsetting 100kg of CO2e. Thus, you would need to buy 10 tickets and spend £20 to offset one tonne of CO2e.
Their story , they say goes like this:
”Climate change is a fact. One of the most effective ways other than changing our habits is by offsetting. But why are so few people doing this?
We’ve been in the business of reducing emissions for quite some time and we wanted to find a way of rewarding you to help us reduce carbon emissions and we think that a lottery is both a fun and effective way of offsetting your carbon footprint “
Interesting …
So they go on to tell us how by purchasing a Carbon Lottery ticket a carbon offset is purchased to the equivalent of a 200 mile trip ….and as with all lotteries…you might win.
Your ticket money goes towards out Carbon Offset projects which are approved and verified by Gold standard and VCS…and the rest towards the prizes and administrative and marketing expenses
They even list their projects…a wind farm project in Turkey , geothermal in Guatemala, biogas in Thailand and hydro in India.
It's a novel concept ...and maybe linking tackling climate change to more traditional pursuits makes good sense
