Environment Canterbury is inviting applications for its Environment Enhancement Fund and the Honda TreeFund until August 31.

The Environment Enhancement Fund, along with the Honda TreeFund, is a contestable fund of $175,000, providing financial assistance to individuals and communities who want to restore or enhance the natural environment.

“We are hoping this year will generate as many high-quality entries as we have seen in the past,” says Environment Canterbury’s pests and biodiversity programme manager Stephen Hall. “Funding is allocated on behalf of Canterbury ratepayers so that the region’s natural environment can be enjoyed by all.”

Projects suitable for funding include initiatives to maintain and protect important ecosystems such as native bush, wetlands and waterways. Environment Enhancement Funding may cover up to 50 percent of the cost of enhancement and restoration plantings or pay towards the cost of fencing needed to protect an area of high biodiversity value, usually up to a maximum of $5000.

The Honda TreeFund contributes towards the cost of native plants only and differs from the Environment Enhancement Fund in two other ways. It can be awarded to any native plantings, not just environment or habitat restorations, and projects on public land may also be eligible.
