Blue Star Group New Zealand has received the internationally renowned PEFC environmental certification, which means it can now offer customers PEFC-labelled products.

Short for the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification, the PEFC labels on its products will mean Blue Star’s customers can show the end user the paper used was responsibly sourced throughout the supply chain, from the forest to the New Zealand supplier.

The labels mean that like every other organisation in the supply chain which led to the end product, Blue Star has met the strict requirements of the PEFC’s certifiers.

Blue Star’s Web printing division Webstar already had PEFC certification, and Jill Cowling – Group executive general manager marketing and product development – says it was a natural step for other divisions to add PEFC to the Forest Stewardship Council accreditation the Group gained in 2007.

“Environmental responsibility is ingrained in Blue Star on both sides of the Tasman, and our senior executives actively encouraged the adoption of PEFC certification among our paper suppliers. So it’s important for us to have taken that next step and be able to label our products with the certification.

“Many of our customers want to be able to demonstrate to the end user that the product they are buying is packaged in responsibly sourced material, and we can now provide that assurance.”

To meet the PEFC certification, Blue Star group needs to annually demonstrate robust administrative processes which ensure all the paper it uses under the PEFC banner comes from PEFC-certified suppliers.

To gain PEFC certification, Blue Star must meet the same responsibility conditions as the other companies in the supply chain, such as acceptable health and safety and workers’ rights conditions.

The certification covers Webstar’s operations in Auckland and Masterton, and other Blue Star Group divisions Format Print Wellington, McCollams Print Auckland, Nicholson Print Solutions Auckland, Printlink Wellington, and Spectrum Print Christchurch.

Webstar also has Enviro-Mark®NZ Diamond certification, the highest level available in New Zealand.
