Get rid of the dishwasher, 41°

Out of the Homestead we got rid of of the old dishwasher right away. They use a lot of water and a lot of energy. We wash our dishes by hand. We also converted the space previously occupied by dishwasher into our recycling area.

We have a Fisher & Paykel dishwasher which uses *less* water (11.6L) on an eco cycle than filling the washing-up sink-bowl (12L). In addition, how many dinner washups has anyone every done in their kitchen sink that only took a single sink-full to clean? :-)

Because dishwashers heat their own water, there is less energy used per litre as heat is wasted when hot water travels to the taps. Sorry, the latest I read is that handwashing and dishwashing are energy and water use equivalents.

My reading is that most dishwashers do use less water. But the human element is the key - only turn it on when it is full! Hand washing after every meal will generally use more water and more energy for heating hot water.
It also relates to how your water is heated at home - electric storage cylinders have a lot of standing losses. A dishwasher with a cold water connection only heats only the amount of water that it needs to heat when it needs to heat it, with no standing losses inbetween washes.

During the summer, when the solar panels are doing their best work, we hook the dishwasher up to a hot water outlet.
