Choose products with less packaging, 587°

Products now seem to be wrapped in so much packaging.

The sum of all the needless plastic used to package products and food in particular must be mind-boggling. If we make an effort to choose goods that use less packaging, maybe we can make a difference!

This is a great idea - is there any way to force companies to use less though?

Once you get in the habit I'm amazed at how guilty I feel when I buy something with lots of packaging.

Like John says. Vote with your dollars. Then tell them why!

"Dear Mr Ty Coon. I considered buying product X from your store but chose not to because of its excessive packaging, deceptive labelling, etc etc. ...."

I get a great satisfaction bellying up to the bulk fook section and filling my re-used plastic containers for the umpteenth time! It was pretty easy to reduce the amount of packaging on my products once I realized how stoooooopid it was to buyt triple-wrapped, safety-sealed containers of honey. Good grief!

We just joined an organic bulk-buying co-op! Once a month we all get together and fill our containers out of big sacks of flour, dried beans, rice, etc.

(Emptied) wine bottles make the perfect containers for liquids like olive oil, tamari and cider vinegar. One of the unforeseen advantages of switching to screw-top wine bottles.

No more over-packaged produce for me! Hooray!

Whilst there's ample room for NZ retailers to improve, I am glad that we are no where near as over-packaged as products in the the UK or NY.

I import product into New Zealand and I stipulate that there is to be no plastic wrap or any packaging at all. "Just pack the product in a cardboard carton and send it over here ". My suppliers realised that I wasn't going to buy from them unless they complied.
