Logic says help the company thats cleaning up it's accident
AFTER they have cleaned up their accident, compensated the ruined economy of the coastal settlements, fire all those that are responsible for the culture that encouraged the shortcuts that killed people (who may be criminally negligent anyway), donate future profits to the restoration of wildlife and marine habitats.. and be made to comply with all standards and procedures that were already in place, Perhaps then, if you still exist, you deserve support.
Logic says, it's an industry problem. Short cuts and massive profits. BP got caught out. BP used to support alternative energy, now they do not. Bad BP.
Perhaps all oil producers must contribute to the clean up. Ultimately, we all pay.

The other oil producers are rubbing there hands with glee at BP's predicament. But as for boycotting BP by the public. What can be achieved by that. BP is needed in the oil industries without european companies the arab nations have free reign. Personally I am looking forward to all oil running out. transferring the dollars to say jahtropha production in deserts. But to punish BP is to cut of the hand of help.

Great point there David, but I have to say my bit about biofuels....
The production on jahtropha creates a raft of specific issues of it's own. Toxic byproducts, eventual degredation of soils etc. Other forms of biofuel production generally cost huge amounts of oil and land to produce as well. Recent reports put the cost of EU's biofuel policy in a worse position than doing nothing: "...targets under the EU renewable energy Directive. It concludes that bio-fuels will create an extra 56MtCO2 per year – the equivalent of 12m to 26m cars on Europe's roads by 2020. This is because Europe will need to cultivate an area somewhere between the size of Belgium and the Republic of Ireland with biofuels to meet the target, which can only be done through land conversion – and more controversially, deforestation." (Plane Tree Capital Newsletter).
We do need to keep looking at this issue. Transport is only a small part of the GHG matrix but it is one we can change....
Electric Vehicles -Charged from renewable resources?
Diesel and oil-based products from waste?
Switch to economy based on an alternative to consuption?
