Working from home is dependent on company policy. I work for one that does not allow this _generally_. Some exclusions.
But I try to travel off peak, so start between 6:30 and 7:00 whenever possible and get back home at about 16:00. Does not work always.
Living close to work is something that can be very difficult in Auckland. Very expensive to be precise.
Plus you will have severe difficulties to live close to work if you and your wife are working fulltime in different locations.
Using public transport is not possible 1) there is none. I could go to the next P&R station with my car and then use the bus. The whole trip would take me 90 minutes, while only 25 minutes by car. Public transport is really not an alternative in Auckland.
I used to go to work and uni in Germany by train. There was a train every 30 minutes, the whole trip took 60 minutes, same as I would have used the car. So yes, there is plenty of space for public transport improvement in NZ.
I got a bike for getting around in the village I life in and I am waiting for a more reliable public transport system to become available.
Apart from that, I walk a lot within Auckland but do not use the bus too much. Usually I reached by destination before the bus would show up at the stop.
General note to working from home: I have done that for three years very successfully in Germany.
In the US, they found a worker sitting at his desk who was dead already for three days and nobody noticed. It seems that being at work is not necessarily a guarantee for doing actual work.
Studies suggest that workers may be more productive at home in their own comfortable end ergonomic, personalised environment.
So I think there needs to be a change in company policy for remote working.
