Use a menstrual cup, 43°

Use a menstrual cup such as 'the keeper' or a 'mooncup' instead of disposable menstrual pads or tampons. Also better than re-usable pads as less to manufacture. Supposed to last 10 yrs but mine is still good after longer than that. Just take it out and wash once or twice a day. Very hygienic, great for traveling or tramping. One of the best things I've ever bought. Buy from 'commonsense organics' or online (google it). Save the 10,000 pads used by an average woman in her lifetime. (unless you opt for a 'no periods' method of contraception.....)

You can also get washable, re-usable cloth pads made from various combinations of bamboo fibre, hemp and/or organic cotton.

Or you could do what our grandmothers did, and make your own cloths out of soft, well-worn fabrics that might otherwise go to waste. Old flannelette shirts or pyjamas are perfect!

There are several local companies making re-usable cloths. I got mine from www.moontime.co.nz about five years ago and they are still going strong. I must have saved at least a million dollars in disposable pads over the last five years! And I'm sure the organic cloths (washed in gentle eco-store laundry products and hung in the sun to dry) are way better for my health.

Yeah they're good. I use the mooncup, and got a friend to send it over from the UK as it's cheaper. Very handy for camping & hiking etc where rubbish bins aren't close at hand...

Apparently the blood is good for your plants too but not sure how keen I would be for that on my indoor potplants.

www.environmenstruals.co.nz has all of the major brands of menstrual cup (mooncup, lunette, meluna, diva, femme, fleur, etc) and locally made cloth pads. Getting your cup locally means that it was shipped together with others, so used slightly less fuel than if you buy them from overseas. Many of the pads are made from reclaimed/recycled fabrics too.
