Choose and/or demand for electronic statements, invoicing / bills, 111°

Many companies are finally catching on. Choose to receive your utility bills via email or view it online. Get your bank statements electronically and stop the postal versions.

It's amazes me that this isn't made available from every single business out there. So it is up to you to demand it from businesses and companies so that they know people want this option. Frankly it usually makes business sense anyway.

I personally receive way too many paper based bills & statements (which I then scan anyway). Think about all the paper which goes into the envelopes and letters, the printing ink, the emissions caused by postal delivery, let alone the piles and piles of paper accumulating in the home office!

We need to remember to take good back-up precautions when doing this. I personally may need to clear some debt as finance companies are required to send paper statements. I found this out while trying to get my paper stopped.

Very interesting. This probably needs someone from a legal arena to comment. I am sure some forms of communications would need to be paper based, simply because of the current legal construct available. But the goal here is to minimise paper based communications. In most cases you need to give consent to receive statements electronically and agree to their Terms & Conditions. Legal requirements aside, here are some companies that I know do offer monthly electronic statements only option: Kiwibank, Mercury Energy, Contact Energy, Vodafone (home & broadband) just to name a few.

Good idea Adrian. We do everything with direct credit or AP now. In addition to this we ditched the cheque book years ago. Almost everything can be bought with credit card these days, and you get the benefit of a month's extra credit.
Also, if you're a fit, doing a runner from a restaurant makes for a cheap night out - and it's unbelievably exhilerating. (I went back and paid the next day, by the way!).

Telecom do electronic statements. I need a cheque book to mainly to pay the kid's fees. The swimming teacher gave me her direct credit details yesterday. I must ask the schools if they could handle direct credit.
