Don't drive like a hoon and ease off the pedal, 161°

Aggressive driving can use as much as a third more fuel than calm smooth driving. Ease up on the accelerator at the lights, it's not a drag race (usually). You will reduce your petrol cost, car maintenance cost and also nasty emissions.

I slowed down heaps once I had kids. Not just safer but also more enjoyable. New pace of life inside the car as well outside!

Me too :-) Rule of thumb for me is to keep engine below 2000 rpm. Also helps choosing non-hilly routes.

I've saved about 10% on my fuel usage by changing my behaviour - nice on the pocket as well!

I reckon that instead of "slow down" and 'speed camera operating" signs we should post messages like "reduce speed to 90km and save 23% on your fuel bill" would reduce driving speed on our roads and save a few lives. I drive like a nana and almost never break the speed limit, and on the open road i annoy people by driving under the speed limit, but not dramatically so. I think it was on the Wasted program that i heard that reducing 10km speed would save 23%.

Our car has a constant computer read-out of your current fuel consumption. It can become a fun challenge to get it as low as possible. Accelerating smoothly and maintaining longer following distances so you don't have to brake so often, can make the difference of about 25%!

I found if I aim for 90kph on 100 sections, my ride is a lot smoother and more relaxing. Before I was always eyeing up the speedo to match 100. Crazy business. Driving slow is a sign of succesful planning and a well balanced life. (This is fine, until I am late for things!!)
