Give away a veggie garden, 21°

Put in a garden for a neighbour or friend. I've discovered that some folks would love a veggie garden but are daunted by the time it takes to get one started. You can use recycled timber or stones to build raised beds, dig a square foot garden, put in a row of corn/beans/squash, or just set them up with a tomato plant in a pot or some kitchen herbs. Once the first hurdle is crossed, most will find the rest of them easier to get over. Encourage pass it forward and soon you'll have a neighbourhood of growers.

What a lovely idea! I have all my veggies in containers (as a renter I'm not in a position to dig up the landlord's lawn!) so we had spare compost and gave it all away to our lovely neighbour to help him get his garden started.

A couple of days later our grateful neighbour gave us a big chunk of beef as a "thank you." Which would be great... except we are vegetarians! LOL!

Our neighbour has a back lawn the size of a handkerchief, while we have a 1/4 acre section and a veggie garden that's just too big for us to really keep on top of.

So one day nearly two years ago while we were toiling in our garden, our neighbours stuck their heads over the fence for a chat and mentioned how jealous they were of our garden. Did we have a deal for them!

There's now a gate in the fence, our neighbours are growing their own veggies in one half of the garden while we grow ours in the other and no one has too much weeding to do.

Win, win :-)

I'm giving away our sweet grounds product to the Jackson Street Programme in Petone, Lower Hutt so they can collect all the coffee grounds for the street, process them, sell the soil conditioner and use the procedes for community gardens and 'greening' the street.
